I
n World War II, 258,000 officers and men served in the Seabees. They were organized into:
12 brigades,
54 regiments,
151 regular battalions,
39 special battalions,
164 detachments,
136 maintenance units,
and 5 pontoon assembly detachments.

They constructed 111 major airstrips, 441  piers, 700 acres of warehouses, hospitals for 70,000 patients, storage for 100 million gallons of gasoline and housing for 1,500,000 men and women.

In 1942, civilian employee Frank J. Iafrate was called on to create a logo for the newly formed Naval Construction Battalions. After designing the "Fighting Seabee" he enlisted. Returning to civilian life after the war, Iafrate maintained a lifelong interest in and active support of the Seabees until his passing in 2000.

The Iafrate Society recognizes those individuals, organizations and companies that show the same commitment to the Seabees through their donation of time or money to the Seabee Museum and Memorial Park. Membership is by vote of the Board of Directors of the Seabee Museum and Memorial Park.
